Stage

Nukkad natak- a loud voice

What is nukkad natak?

bechari-amrita

Break the barriers ….raise ur voice…and reach the people . This is how I will define Nukkad natak . It’s an integral part of Indian tradition. The idea of nukkad natak is to propagate social and political messages in a humorous and sarcastic way and create awareness amongst the masses. Passion, energy, creativity and freedom to perform in the open skies without constraints of a stage , and a powerful medium to raise ur concerns and spread awareness, that is what Nukkad is all about.

History

There has been an explosion of Nukkad activity in india in the eighties and nineties. It was driven to Street because theatres would not stage such political plays which were characterised by vivid portrayal of real events, popular language and minimal props.
SAFDAR HASHMI, founder of the ‘Jan Natya Manch’ and an ITPA activist, also known as father of street plays , endorsed Nukkad natak to criticize government policies and support social activism. He was murdered  by political henchmen while performing his Street play “Halla Bol”. His slaying was given wide coverage in national press and hence leading to social awareness of the masses.

Why nukkad natak at Jairangam?

ishq-ahaan

High energy acts coupled with zeal and a will to supersede the plurality of performances is what Jairangam plans to showcase. Jairangam wants to awaken them who slumber in the face of injustice, fear, callousness by means of Nukkad natak, because it’s a powerful tool by which we can make the society a better place to live in.

Nukkad natak’s major domain was and continues to be, social awareness…it’s a form of drama that comes with a cause. This is true for the third world countries like India, where political activism is strong and democracy is regarded highly and facing issues From corruption to female foeticide…..from everyone teasing to gang rapes.

Jairangam will be showcasing Rang mastaaney’s Abhishek mudgal along with his group who will raise his voice in perhaps the most effective way by combining live action before live audience with an instantaneous responses of applause and tears in the middle of the streets from 13th Nov.  To 27th Nov. with 50 nukkad nataks.
Don’t forget to stop a while. You will come away entertained and may be just a little wiser.

Nukkad natak

soul-saga

jaana

New city based artists

Fearlessly experimental, highly imaginative and very contemporary – that’s how we would describe Jairangam with its idea of showcasing new city based talents.

The Jaipur  Theatre Festival promises to be an extravagant affair that is both diverse in the subject matter of featured productions as well as in presentation styles. Young theatre artists from the city will deal with contemporary issues facing our collective societies. Don’t expect to see a static stage. From 21st November to 27th November catch some of the most interesting plays in theatre from our own artists. Jairangam is an annual event and has proved to be quite successful over the past years. One can expect plenty of high quality performances from the homegrown work.

It will be quirky, unique and entertaining to undiscover the emerging playwrights. Jairangam will showcase plays with unique and innovative theatrical ideas and is committed to spreading theatre culture amongst all gens.

Plays to watch out:

hamlet
Pranab Mukherjee’s ” Hamlet In and Hamlet Out ” that peep’s into director’s mind scape. Who is hamlet? A man lost in life…a waylaid person…a women coming to terms with her domestic and public person. A person grappling with what the cloud terrors around us…is hamlet another word for death or dream?
Saurabh shrivastava’s  ” Bechari Amrita ” revolves around a writer who invites a tantric to conduct a seance. The seance back fires when he is haunted by the ghost of his first wife and second wife is not able to see or hear the ghost.

Jairangam is designed to present unique opportunity for artists and audience alike  , revisiting classic plays with innovative productions, developing and nurturing new plays and offering a range rich in array.

Not Just a Play

Waiting backstage looking at the play progressing and waiting to get the cue where he’s supposed to enter. As he gets the cue he steps out in confidence displaying a whole new face that nobody has seen before, that nobody knows, as if he were wearing a mask of somebody else walking everyone around through the experience and characteristics of this new self as the play progresses. He forgets his real self, what he’s like and steps into a different character each time he steps on the stage to perform in front of an audience. As if he’s always been this guy that they are witnessing the very moment. He moves with such ease, says things at such ease, and makes us believe that he’s not somebody else playing a role, but the man is for real and not just a character. He tells a story so comfortably on a stage as if it were his own and he moves around like he’s just moving around in his home and he’s lived here forever.

ok-tata

He invites everyone, everyone who is staring with all their heart and soul, he invites them all to come with him and take a peek in a part of his small little world and travel time and places while sitting at one spot. Feel the deepest, unsaid feelings, he evokes turmoil in each heart with every changing action to discover something new altogether.

For the audience, it is like getting to know a new person, his relationships, lifestyle, his small little world and becoming a part of it while leaving everything else behind. Getting lost in the story and curiously following it, like walking on an empty footpath, to where it leads.

the-job

Theatre is not just about the play you go to watch for two hours, it is about the impact, impression and the footprint it leaves in your heart when you have watched it, and that excitement which keeps you wanting more. It isn’t just storytelling, but time travel and a journey which you take on without knowing the destination. An actor doesn’t just act, but leaves a part of his soul with everyone who watches him conquer the stage.

ravan-ki-ramayan

The curtain raiser

“Movies will make you famous; Television will make you rich; But theatre will make you good.” Terence Mann, the Brodway icon once said. In the times when cinema has becoming the defining entertainment medium, theatre continues to be culturally important and relevant as a performance art. Perhaps because without the assistance of editing rooms and retakes, theatre depends on the performing power of actors on stage. Theatre is raw, and that is what makes it enduring, irrespective of the rise of other performance forms.

Half a decade ago, Jaipur added a new gem to its rich cultural crown. Jairangam, a theatre festival that since then has grown from a modest coming together of theatre aficionados to a national theatre festival that draws talented artists, playwrights and directors from across the globe.

In 2011, Jairangam was started with a vision to provide a world-class platform to theatre art forms, cutting across cultural, lingual and regional banners. Jairangam belongs as much as to the spirit of social conscious Nukkad Naatak as it does to the evolved nuances of modern Shakespearean adaptations.

Not just behind, but beyond the stage

Art forms are like living, breathing organisms that function together as an ecosystem and it is impossible to imagine one without another. At Jairangam 2016, photography and painting will be celebrated as much as theatre would be. Art strokes is an art camp that will be held through the six days where eminent artists will demonstrate their work live and young artists can come work together with them to widen their skillset. Khushbu-E-Rajasthan is an online photography contest for all the shutterbugs running in association with Jairangam that will end with an exhibition of the 100 most thought-stirring photographs. Jairangam is thus an event for more than just theatre aficionados, embodying a celebration of life and art, and what other place would be a better place to mark this celebration than the land of folk tales and kathputlis. Hope to see you there!
